15 x 16 x 12” | Sculpture of bricks, mortar, and plaster mixed with brick dust | 2022
Crafted from bricks excavated from Carrboro North Carolina, historically a sundown town that was shut down by the NAACP. The fist formed from brick dust emerges through the pit- UNC’s location for freedom of speech that is tainted by hate. “Shattered Pit” honors the slaves who died making the first public college their ancestors wouldn't get to use for hundreds of years, the Chapel Hill 9, and the NAACP’s clandestine meetings at Hargraves community center. It pays homage to the Black Student Movement, James Lewis Cates Jr, Howard Lee, Nikole Hannah Jones, and the Black UNC students and community members across generations.
