Dea Flore

30x40” | Acrylic on Stretched Canvas | 2023

Flora the Roman goddess of fertility is said to be created in a multitude of ways. The most common narrative is that a nymph named Chloris was kissed by the West Wind, Zephyrus, and then she was turned into Flora. Historians speculate if this was a kiss or actually a woman who was raped while other historians believe the story was created after a wealthy Roman prostitute who left money for the creation of Floriala, a six-day celebration of the goddess Flora. In this painting, I attempted to combine these narratives as well as portray a version of Flora I became enamored with in the summer of 2023, a Dutch florist by the name of Falcke.
